Caldera 50cm Basalt Polished Column Water Feature

A compact but substantial natural basalt column combining polished surfaces, darker mineral tones and continuously moving water.

Standing approximately 50cm high with a naturally varying diameter of around 20–25cm, this Caldera provides the solidity and character of genuine basalt in a more compact format.

Water bubbles gently from the top before travelling down the stone. Smoother polished areas encourage a cleaner cascade and stronger reflections, while more textured sections break the flow and retain the natural character of the basalt.

At approximately 50kg, this remains a substantial piece of natural stone. Every column varies in shape, texture and colouring, giving each finished installation its own individual appearance.

The polished basalt water effect

Water turns dark natural stone into a reflective moving surface.

Water rises internally through the basalt before bubbling gently from the top of the column.

From there it cascades down the outer surface, flowing more cleanly across polished areas while naturally textured sections create subtle variations in direction and movement.

As the stone becomes wet, its charcoal, black and brown tones deepen considerably, giving the relatively compact column a richer and more dramatic appearance.

Genuine natural basalt

Charcoal, black and earthy brown tones unique to every column.

Basalt naturally displays variations through charcoal, black and brown rather than one perfectly uniform colour.

Polishing selected surfaces brings additional depth and smoothness to the stone while retaining enough natural texture to preserve its rugged character.

As water passes over the feature, darker areas intensify and subtle differences within the stone become more prominent.

No two pieces are identical

Exact diameter, shape, colouring, mineral markings and surface texture vary naturally. Dimensions are approximate because each Caldera is made from an individual piece of basalt.

A more compact basalt focal point

Well suited to smaller spaces without losing the presence of natural stone.

The lower 50cm height makes this model particularly useful where a taller column might interrupt views or overpower surrounding planting.

Its dark colouring contrasts strongly with foliage and lighter landscaping, while the relatively broad natural diameter helps the feature retain visual weight.

Keep the reservoir beneath the surface and the natural basalt on show.

The supplied heavy-duty reservoir measures approximately 66cm in diameter by 40cm high and is designed to sit below the finished landscape surface.

Choose the position

Select a firm, level position with access to a suitable outdoor electrical supply.

Excavate

Prepare a suitable opening for the supplied 66cm diameter by 40cm high reservoir.

Level the reservoir

Position the heavy-duty pool securely and ensure it sits level below the finished surface.

Install the pump

Position the supplied mains-powered pump within the reservoir and connect the water feed.

Prepare the support

Ensure the support is firm and suitable for the approximately 50kg natural stone feature.

Position the basalt

Carefully centre and level the column above the concealed water reservoir.

Finish the surface

Conceal the reservoir with decorative pebbles while retaining suitable access for maintenance.

Fill & enjoy

Fill the reservoir and start the pump. Water rises through the basalt before cascading back into the pool below.

No permanent water supply required This Caldera uses a self-contained recirculating water system, so no permanent plumbing connection is required. The standard kit includes a mains-powered pump with a 10m cable. Top up the reservoir periodically to replace water naturally lost through evaporation and splash.
