Water Feature Care & Maintenance

Keep your fountain looking its best and help protect the pump, reservoir and body of the feature with straightforward seasonal maintenance.

Algae, limescale, leaves and garden debris are the main day-to-day issues. In winter, the bigger risk is water freezing inside the feature, where expansion can damage pumps, reservoirs, pipework and the feature itself.

WHAT NEEDS ATTENTION?

Four common causes of water feature problems.

Most routine care comes down to keeping the water and pump clean, dealing with mineral deposits before they build up and preparing the feature properly before freezing weather.

01   /   ALGAE

Green Water & Slippery Deposits

Sunlight and warmer weather can encourage algae in recirculating water. Regular cleaning and a suitable water feature algae treatment can help keep the water clearer between cleans.

02   /   LIMESCALE

Water Marks & Mineral Build-Up

As water evaporates it can leave mineral deposits behind. These are particularly noticeable on polished stainless steel, where regular cleaning helps preserve the reflective finish.

03   /   LEAVES & DEBRIS

Keep the Pump Inlet Clear

Leaves, blossom, soil and other garden debris can collect in reservoirs and restrict the pump. Remove larger material regularly and clean accessible pump inlets when required.

04   /   FROST

Freezing Water Can Cause Damage

Water expands as it freezes. If trapped inside a pump, reservoir, pipe or feature body, that expansion can cause cracking, splitting or damage to internal components.

WINTER CARE

The main winter risk is water freezing inside the feature.

The safest approach is to prevent water being trapped where it can freeze and expand. Smaller movable features are best drained, cleaned and stored somewhere frost-free. Larger features that must remain outside should be fully drained and then protected from winter weather.

1. DRAIN ITEmpty the reservoir and remove as much water as possible from the pump, pipes and body of the feature before freezing temperatures arrive.
2. STORE IT IF PRACTICALIf the fountain can be moved safely, a dry frost-free garage, shed or other protected space is preferable to leaving it exposed outdoors through winter.
3. COVER LARGER FEATURESIf moving the feature is impractical, drain it thoroughly first and then fit a suitable winter protection cover to help keep rain, snow, leaves and debris out.

MOST POPULAR CARE OPTION

Start with a Water Feature Maintenance Kit.

Our maintenance kits are the best-selling products in this category because they combine the main seasonal care essentials in one convenient package.

WHY START WITH A KIT?

Everything you are likely to need, bought together.

For many customers the maintenance kit is the easiest way to avoid forgetting an important part of water feature care. It is especially useful before winter, when cleaning, draining and protection all become more important.

THREE WATER FEATURE CARE ESSENTIALS

Protection, cleaner water and a better finish.

Choose individual care products when you already know what your feature needs, or combine them with a maintenance kit for more complete seasonal protection.

01   /   WINTER PROTECTION COVERS

For Features That Stay Outside

A cover helps shield a drained feature from rain, snow, leaves and winter debris. The important step is to drain the fountain first — a cover cannot protect water that has already been left trapped inside the feature to freeze.

02   /   ALGAE PREVENTION

Help Keep Recirculating Water Clearer

Algae can quickly make a fountain look neglected during warmer weather. Aqua Moda Professional Algae Prevention is formulated for water features and can be added periodically to help control algae and bacteria between cleans.

03   /   STAINLESS STEEL CLEANER

For Grime, Water Marks & Limescale

Polished stainless steel shows water marks and mineral deposits more readily than many other finishes. Regular use of a suitable stainless steel cleaner helps remove grime and limescale before deposits become heavily established.

A SIMPLE MAINTENANCE ROUTINE

Small jobs throughout the year prevent bigger problems later.

The exact routine depends on the design and material, but these four steps cover the essentials for most self-contained garden water features.

01   CHECK

Water Level & Flow

Top up water lost through evaporation and make sure the pump remains properly submerged and the flow pattern looks normal.

02   CLEAR

Leaves & Debris

Remove visible debris before it reaches the pump and periodically inspect accessible pump inlets and reservoirs.

03   CLEAN

Algae & Deposits

Treat algae as required and wipe away grime, limescale and water marks before they become heavily established.

04   WINTERISE

Drain Before Frost

Drain thoroughly before freezing weather, then move the feature into frost-free storage or protect it outside with a suitable cover.
