Indoor installation needs a little more thought than outdoor use. All open water features have the potential to splash, so flooring, positioning, ventilation and routine cleaning should be considered before choosing the right design for the space.

CHOOSING A WATER FEATURE FOR INDOORS
Choose around the room, not just the look.
A fountain can work beautifully indoors, but the best choice depends on how much water movement you want, the surrounding finishes and how much space you can allow around the feature.
01 SPLASH
No Open Fountain Is Completely Splash-Free
The amount of splash depends on the design, height of the water fall, pump flow, water level and surrounding air movement. Smaller, gentler fountains will usually be easier to manage indoors.
02 FLOORING
Water-Resistant Surfaces Are Preferable
Porcelain or ceramic tiles, natural stone, sealed concrete and similar surfaces are generally better suited than carpet. Timber and laminate also need care where repeated moisture could reach joints or edges.
03 POSITIONING
Give the Feature Some Breathing Space
Avoid placing an open fountain immediately beside delicate furniture, soft furnishings or electrical equipment. With larger installations, it is sensible to treat the immediate surroundings as a small wet zone.

Indoor fountains are straightforward when the feature and room are well matched. These are the main considerations we would check before recommending a design.
EXPECT SOME SPLASHEven a well-set-up fountain can produce occasional droplets. Larger falls and exposed water surfaces tend to need more clearance around the feature.
ALLOW FOR HUMIDITYOpen water evaporates into the room. The effect may be small with a compact fountain, but larger reservoirs and water walls can contribute more moisture and benefit from good ventilation.
CHECK THE FLOOR FINISHTiled, stone or other water-resistant surfaces are easier to live with around a fountain. Carpet and moisture-sensitive flooring require greater caution.
KEEP THE WATER CLEANRecirculating fountains need routine cleaning. Do not allow deposits, algae, organic material or biofilm to build up, and avoid leaving water stagnant for prolonged periods.

Recirculating water needs regular attention.
The reservoir, pump and accessible surfaces should be kept clean and the fountain should be maintained in accordance with its instructions.
Indoor ornamental fountains are recirculating water systems. Regular cleaning helps control deposits, algae, organic material and biofilm, while stagnant water should not be left sitting unused for prolonged periods, particularly in warm conditions.
For commercial settings such as offices, hotels, showrooms and reception areas, the person responsible for the premises should consider the fountain as part of the appropriate water-hygiene and Legionella risk assessment and maintenance regime.
LEGIONELLA & ORNAMENTAL FOUNTAINS
The Health and Safety Executive identifies indoor ornamental fountains among water systems that can present a foreseeable Legionella risk where conditions allow bacteria to grow and water droplets or aerosols can be produced.
