BOOK A CONSULTATIONA broad natural basalt column combining rugged carved stone with polished detailing to create an organic, constantly changing cascade.
Standing approximately 60cm high and around 30–35cm across, this Caldera has a more substantial, irregular form than the slimmer basalt columns within the collection.
Water bubbles from the top before flowing across a combination of polished, carved and naturally textured basalt. Smoother areas create cleaner movement and reflection, while the more rugged surfaces interrupt the flow into ripples and smaller streams.
Natural charcoal, black and earthy brown colouring becomes richer once wet, while variations in stone shape, texture and colour make every individual feature different.
The broad 30–35cm natural stone form gives this Caldera a stronger sense of mass, while the mix of polished and rugged surfaces creates a more varied water effect.
A wider natural profile gives the feature more physical presence than the slimmer basalt columns in the range.
Smooth and carved surfaces sit alongside more rustic stone, creating visual depth even before the water begins to flow.
Natural differences in shape, size, colouring and stone texture ensure each finished water feature has its own character.
Water rises internally through the basalt and bubbles gently from the top of the feature.
Across smoother polished sections it forms a cleaner, more reflective flow. As it reaches carved and more rugged areas, the uneven surface breaks the cascade into smaller channels, ripples and changing patterns.
The broad natural form means the water can follow different paths around the feature rather than producing a perfectly uniform manufactured cascade.
Smoother finished areas expose more of the dark mineral colour and allow water to move in a thinner, more reflective film.
More irregular sections retain the raw character of natural stone, catching the water and creating stronger texture, shadows and rippling.
At approximately 60cm high, this feature provides useful vertical presence without reaching the height of the tallest Caldera columns.
The real distinction is its 30–35cm natural width. That broader form gives it more visual weight and emphasises the fact that it has been created from an individual piece of basalt.
Basalt naturally displays a mixture of charcoal, black and earthy brown tones, with mineral markings and textures changing from piece to piece.
Polishing and carving selected areas introduces additional contrast without removing the irregular qualities that make the stone distinctive.
Once wet, the darker colours deepen and differences between polished and rugged surfaces become considerably more pronounced.
Exact width, shape, colour, markings and surface texture will vary between individual pieces. Dimensions are approximate because the feature is made from genuine natural basalt rather than a moulded material.
The wider, irregular basalt form works particularly well amongst planting and gravel, where its natural texture can become part of the surrounding landscape.
At around 60cm high it remains visible amongst lower foliage while avoiding the stronger vertical emphasis of a very tall column.
The dark basalt also contrasts strongly with fresh green planting and lighter decorative stone.
The feature is supplied with a 66cm diameter heavy-duty pebble pool, allowing the reservoir to be installed beneath the finished garden surface.
Select a firm, level location with suitable access for the water pump.
Prepare the opening required for the supplied 66cm diameter heavy-duty reservoir.
Position the pebble pool securely and ensure it sits level below the finished surface.
Position the supplied pump within the reservoir and connect the water feed to the basalt.
Ensure the feature has a firm and stable support above the concealed reservoir.
Carefully centre and level the natural stone feature over the water system.
Conceal the reservoir with decorative pebbles while retaining suitable access for future maintenance.
Fill the reservoir and start the pump. Water bubbles from the top before cascading across the polished and rustic basalt.
Decorative pebbles are available separately, allowing the reservoir to be concealed beneath a finish chosen to complement the basalt and surrounding landscape.
The stone displays softer charcoal, black and brown tones, with polished surfaces contrasting against the more rugged carved and natural areas.
The basalt darkens considerably. Polished sections develop a deeper sheen while rugged areas create stronger shadows, highlights and visibly more broken water movement.
Explore the wider Caldera collection for alternative basalt textures, natural stone forms, heights and water effects, from compact polished columns to larger rugged statement pieces.
Our water feature specialists can help you compare polished, carved and more rustic basalt designs, as well as advise on scale, positioning and concealed reservoir installation.
