THE DEVELOPMENT
Large-scale regeneration with public space at its heart.
Woodberry Down is an ongoing redevelopment project in Finsbury, North London by The Berkeley Group, with more than 5,500 new homes across a 25-hectare site.
The development places emphasis on sustainability, open public spaces and community facilities, creating a setting where large-scale landscape features can become part of the wider public realm.
THE INSTALLATION
A 2-metre sphere within a five-metre tiered feature.
Installed in 2012, the feature centres on a five-metre-diameter stainless steel bowl that cascades down through multiple levels into a lower pool.
Within that lower pool sits a 2-metre stainless steel sphere, manufactured and supplied by WaterFeatures.com.
The mirrored form introduces a strong focal point within a much larger composition of steel, water and stepped levels.
THE RESULT
Still making an impact more than a decade later.
More than ten years after installation, the Aterno 200cm Stainless Steel Sphere remains in place at Woodberry Down, with its reflective mirrored surface continuing to form part of the development's landscape.
Constructed from Grade 304 stainless steel, the sphere was selected as a durable statement feature for this long-term urban development.
DESIGN DETAILS
A focal point within a larger composition.
Rather than acting as a standalone feature, the stainless steel sphere is integrated into a much larger sequence of bowls, levels and moving water.
01 SCALE
A 2-metre sphere has enough presence to hold its own within a five-metre-diameter water feature.
02 INTEGRATION
The sphere sits within the lower pool, making it part of the wider stepped composition rather than a separate object.
03 MATERIAL
Grade 304 stainless steel provides the polished mirrored finish used throughout the feature.
