Corten is a type of weathering steel designed to form a dense protective patina as it is exposed to alternating wet and dry conditions. Rather than being a fixed painted finish, the colour evolves from brighter orange and rust tones towards deeper browns as the surface matures.

Corten is valued as much for its appearance as its practicality. Its weathered surface gives contemporary forms a softer, more natural character and works particularly well with planting, stone and neutral paving.
01 WEATHERING STEEL
A Patina That Protects the Surface
Exposure to alternating wet and dry conditions creates a dense oxide layer on the steel. As this patina develops it slows further corrosion, which is what makes weathering steel different from ordinary untreated mild steel.
02 WARM NATURAL COLOUR
Rust, Orange & Deep Brown Tones
The finish moves through changing earthy tones rather than staying one uniform colour, creating strong contrast with green planting and a warmer alternative to polished stainless steel.
03 LOW-MAINTENANCE FINISH
No Painted Surface to Preserve
The appearance comes from the steel itself rather than a decorative paint layer. Once established, the patina is intended to remain exposed and continue maturing naturally outdoors.
HOW CORTEN WEATHERS
The colour you buy is not necessarily the colour it stays.
Weathering is a natural process, so exact colour and speed vary with exposure, rainfall, airflow and local conditions. Many of our Corten designs are pre-weathered, but the surface will still continue to mature after installation.
STAGE 01 / EARLY FINISH
Grey, Orange or Mixed Tones
Newer or less-weathered areas can show grey steel alongside brighter orange oxidation. This variation is normal and does not mean the finish is defective.
STAGE 02 / ACTIVE WEATHERING
Wet & Dry Cycles Build the Patina
Rain and moisture encourage oxidation, while drying periods help the protective layer develop. Repeated wet-and-dry cycles are central to the weathering process.
STAGE 03 / MATURING COLOUR
Brighter Rust Deepens
As the surface develops, brighter orange and rust shades generally move towards more settled light and dark brown tones, with natural variation across the piece.
STAGE 04 / ESTABLISHED PATINA
A More Stable Living Surface
The patina becomes denser and slows further corrosion, but Corten should still be expected to change subtly rather than remain visually identical year after year.
BEFORE YOU CHOOSE CORTEN
A few things worth knowing before installation.
Corten is intentionally designed to weather, so some of the characteristics that make it attractive also need to be considered when deciding where to position it.
RUST-COLOURED RUN-OFFDuring active weathering, rain or water can carry rust-coloured residue from the surface. Take particular care around pale or porous paving where staining may be difficult to remove.
COLOUR VARIATION IS NORMALDifferent faces and areas can weather at different speeds. Do not expect the perfectly even, fixed finish you would get from painted or powder-coated metal.
PRE-WEATHERED STILL EVOLVESA pre-weathered product arrives with much of the desired character already visible, but the finish is still a living surface and will continue to deepen and change outdoors.
LOCATION MATTERSAirflow, exposure and repeated wet-and-dry cycles affect patina formation. Very sheltered, persistently damp or salt-rich environments can alter the way weathering steel performs and looks.
