Basalt, limestone and marble come from different parts of the rock cycle, which is reflected in their texture, colour and character.
BASALT / IGNEOUS
Born from cooled volcanic lava
Basalt is a dense, fine-grained volcanic rock. Its charcoal, dark grey and black tones become richer when wet, giving fountains a strong geological and naturally sculptural character.
LIMESTONE / SEDIMENTARY
Built from ancient sediments
Limestone forms through long-term deposition and compaction of calcium-rich material. Black limestone gives a smoother, more restrained appearance than rugged basalt and darkens dramatically when wet.
MARBLE / METAMORPHIC
Limestone transformed by heat and pressure
Marble develops when carbonate-rich stone is altered by heat and pressure. The result is a more decorative material with polished surfaces, veining and individual mineral pattern.

Both use dark volcanic stone, but the way the basalt is shaped produces very different results.

Miren keeps more of the original character of the stone. Expect irregular edges, individual markings and natural variation. It is particularly effective in planting-led gardens where the feature should feel integrated into the landscape rather than placed on top of it.

Dark stone becomes richer and deeper.
Basalt generally becomes darker and more dramatic, while black limestone often shifts towards a much richer near-black appearance once water moves across the surface.
